5 Beauty Secrets that will save your life…

Hey Beauty Babes thanks for visiting me on my blog again. I wouldn’t know what to do with all the random information I gather if I didn’t have all of you to talk to! I have been spending some time gathering beauty facts. 10 plus years to be exact, and I thought I would share 5 beauty secrets that you need to know. When your done reading please share your favorite beauty secrets with me in the comments.

Beauty Secret 1: Prime your perfume with Vaseline. We prime our faces, and our eyes before we put makeup on them but has anybody EVER told you to dab a little layer of Vaseline in the areas you plan to apply your perfume? The Vaseline will trap some of the scent and keep it alive for much longer. Obviously be careful. Don’t apply your Vaseline to thick or you will be sticky and uncomfortable.

Beauty Seret 2: Argan and Jojoba oils are the BEST for your hair. These specific oils have the smallest molecular makeup and the right molecular weight to penetrate more deeply into the hair cuticle. There are tons of oils out there that people like to use for their skin, and hair but they are NOT all created equal. In fact some oils may be coating your hair or clogging your pores. Everybody jumped on the coconut oil bandwagon but it may not be your best bet depending on your hair type. It is not the worst oil for you but it also doesn’t have the most lucrative molecular makeup for optimal hair health. Keune So Pure Argan Oil, Kevin Murphy Young.Again oil, and Leonor Greyl Magnolia Oil are my personal favorites and have the best molecular makeup for your hair.

Speaking of oils… Beauty Secret 3: Solar Oil is BOMB for your nails. Don’t tell me why nail techs don’t always share this secret but its major! You know how you get your nails removed and the health of your real nail emerges absolute garbage? Well there are several reasons why, and your first step should be to find an amazing nail tech who truly cares for your nails health and wellbeing. They seem to be few and far between and I have ALWAYS wanted one at my spa ( holler if you know somebody ). One magical nail tech once told me that putting nail enhancements on your natural nail deprives them of moisture. The gel, acrylic or dip powder soaks up the hydration leaving none behind for you. If you rub some solar oil on your nails every other day then your nail enhancement will have all the oil it needs and it won’t steal it from your natural nails. Long story short you can have nail enhancements and healthy natural nails. It’s just not cheap, and you have to go out of your way to find a nail tech who will go out of their way to make sure of it.

Beauty Secret 4: Paraffin wax for your hands and feet. Since we just talked about your nails lets move along and address your hands. If you have never heard of paraffin wax it is an amazing way to soften your skin. You can get a paraffin Wax hand or foot dip at your local salon or spa or you can do it yourself at home. I will say it can seem a little daunting on your own but it’s really pretty basic. The wax will harden around your hands and when you pull them out of the bag your skin will feel like silk.

Beauty Secret 5: Aloe Vera juice is like a multi vitamin for your hair and it promotes a healthy scalp. You can grow your own aloe. It is one of the easier plants to keep alive and every so often break off a stalk and juice it. It makes your hair feel great but mostly it’s a miracle for your scalp. It helps with dry scalp, dandruff. Side note it helps prevent hair loss by breaking down the build up that clogs hair follicles and stimulates fresh hair growth. So slather your scalp with aloe once a week and watch your hair bounce back baby.

There are probably another hundred or more tidbits I could share but I had just enough time to get these 5 down on paper. I took my time choosing the best few for this particular article but you should book an appointment with your stylist because they can share so much more. Think of your stylists recommendations as a prescription for healthy hair and skin. If you do not already have a stylist you love you can always book one of mine online at www.pommespa.com. Start with a free consultation or a basic haircut and they will come up with a complete beauty plan customized just for you. Thanks for being with me, and happy skin and hair all year long!

The Truth About Beauty Oils

The Truth About Beauty Oils

By Heather Leslie Tabor

If you are still using coconut oil for everything from cooking to deep conditioning your hair raise your hand? The trend hit like a freight train, and most people never got off at the station. The hard truth? Coconut oil is NOT a cure for everything. If you read on I will give you all the information you need to select the appropriate oils for your beauty routine.

Have you ever wondered why they do not make a one size fits all beauty oil that you can apply from head to toe for hair, skin, and nails? There are 3 foundational reasons. 1. Molecular makeup matters! I am going to get all scientific on you in the next paragraph so “bare” with me. (Yes that is a skincare pun). 2. Build up is bad for many reasons which we will discuss. 3. The product’s weight plays a huge part in how your hair looks, and feels.

Some of my favorite products for smoothing and healing hair.

1. Molecular make up matters because to work the oil has to be able to penetrate your hairs cuticle layer or you skin’s pores. If you use an oil with a large molecule it will sit on top of your hair rather than seep into the cuticle layer. Oils do more good from within. If they can’t get in they simply coat the outside of the hair strand. It might make it feel better immediately, but as soon as you shampoo it will be dry again. If the oil can get inside it can heal deeply rather than make it feel better temporarily. The same is true for your skin. It must be able to penetrate the skin surface.

2. Build up is bad. Large molecules that sit on the surface of your hair, and skin tend to build up over time. This build up can stop your expensive professional products from doing their job. Pro products are usually designed with the correct size molecule to penetrate your hair shaft or your skin, and work really well. If they are blocked by a build up of larger molecules they will only be semi effective. This applies to the build up you get from drug store brand products as well. They block the good stuff from doing it’s job! Detox your hair with a maxi wash or exfoliate well before you switch to your new professional brand products for better results.

3. Choose the right weight. Your products oil or otherwise NEED to be the appropriate weight for your hair and skin. Finding the right weight is tricky because everyone is different. If your hair is course or wiry you can use a heavier weight oil. If your skin is already oily you may need a lighter weight oil based product. The absolute BEST way to determine what product you need is to ask your Hairstylist or Esthetician. At my salon we do FREE consultations and skin assessments.

My personal favorite beauty oils….

Leneor Greyl Magnolia oil( great for hair & skin )

Keune Argan Oil Light ( hair )

Pur Erb Deep Cleansing Oil ( skin )

Blossom Cuticle Oil ( nails )

Kevin Murphy Young.Again Oil (hair)

I wish you the best of luck in your beauty journey. We are always here for your at Pomme Salon & Spa. Visit our website for more information on our products and services. Feel free to comment with questions! We personally respond to every one.

5 Autumn Ideas for your hair

Happy Fall sweet clients and friends. With a new season comes change. In other places you watch the leaves change color and slip gracefully to their crunchy grave on the ground, but here in Texas we bust out boots and sweaters on Monday, and slip into a tank top on Tuesday. We wonder if we will sweat through our Halloween Costumes or have to ruin them with a sweater. Long story short the one thing you can bet on is things are changing. People like to change their hair, their clothes, their flavors…. Queue Pumpkin Spice Season. Here are some Autumn ideas for fun little changes you may want to make. Spoiler alert all of these ideas are GOOD FOR YOU!

  1. Everybody wants to change their hair color when the seasons change. That is a given, but with all the heaters coming on we suck every bit of moisture out of the air. Couple that with the summer damage we have done, and you hair is probably fried. I would like to suggest that it is the PERFECT time of year for Hair Treatments. Put that moisture back in there baby.
  2. Change up the product girl! It is time to bust out your hair oils, smoothing products and thicker conditioners. If you get oily hair, have fine hair or a lot of damage I would like to introduce my new favorite line of products… Hairstory is a whole new way of shampooing. One product to rule them all. No more Shampoo and then Conditioner. I can only share my experience. The non suds nature was odd for me at first but once my hair dried I could not stop touching it. I knew this product was amazing, and the shampoo brush is the perfect perk. Dare I say my split ends are better… Yes I do. It is a pro product so you will need a link to buy. I will share mine here for you to take a look. xoxo     Hairstory Link
  3. Everybody wants to go darker for the fall but when I think fall I immediately see Pumpkin Spice, Caramel, Cinnamon, fallen leaves, Hot Chocolate… I think warmth. Ask your Hairstylist if you have the skin tone to go in a copper, red or golden direction instead of just plain dark. You can always do this in a semi permanent which will allow for easy change if you want to go back after the seasons change.  golden20181229_142056 cropped-fb_img_1489564670343.jpg
  4. I know it seems typical to grow your hair out to keep you warm during the winter, but consider going in the opposite direction. A textured bob paired with a beautiful scarf and some chunky earrings is a very trendy way to spend your fall season.
  5. This suggestion is only hair related in the sense that I own a small local Hair Salon in Dripping Springs, but I am going to throw it out there anyways. As Christmas approaches SHOP LOCAL! Your small local businesses need your support more than the typical chains do. Gift cards, stocking stuffers, packages, products and so much more unique, and interesting finds await you in that sweet local shop you may not have noticed before. You can expect to find a local business guide for Christmas shopping in my next article.

Until then. Thank you for reading all about the 5 Autumn Ideas I had for your hair. As always I am available for all of your questions, comments, and ideas for future articles. I hope you are having a wonderful Fall Season so far.

Peace. Love. Pomme

Most honest self-care tip of all time…

Honor is a word widely ignored. I found myself telling my son when he argued that he did not have to agree with me, but he still had to honor me as his parent. I began to reflect on that tidbit and realized that we as a society tend to be lacking in honor.

A lot of us have adopted the idea that to be okay we have to agree implicitly with one another.  What if we reverse that thought, and begin to tell ourselves all we have to do is honor ourselves and each other.  If we can honor each other through differences then we will be able to reach a new level of conscious being, and open ourselves up to heightened mental state.

Imagine… you honor somebody enough to hear them out without contemplating your own agenda. Bam! You have just opened your mind up to a whole new place. If you aren’t busy forming your rebuttal you might hear what somebody is trying to say. You are flexing your mind. the more you know, hear, see, experience the smarter you are. If you are not constantly searching for a way to make your point or be right then you will remove a tremendous amount of stress in your life. Suddenly it is okay if they have a different perspective, and it’s no longer your job to convince anybody of anything.  Secondarily honor goes both ways. You have to honor yourself as well. This may mean that you don’t change your mind about how you feel at all, and that is okay.

So here are several ways to honor yourself and invite a heightened level of self-care into your life.

  1. Listen to yourself. What are you truly saying. Maybe the words coming out of your mouth are yes but realistically you need to say no. Try this… for a week when anybody asks you to do something instead of saying yes or no say ” Let me see if I can. ” Then take your time and get back to the person. Maybe the answer is hell yeah. maybe it’s not right now. Either way you honored yourself enough to take the time you needed to listen to yourself.
  2. Evaluate your desires on a couple of levels. Is it imperative to making you a better you? Will it hurt your family? Can you afford it? If the answer to these questions is an astounding YES, NO, YES. Then what the hell… do it.  That is honoring your personal desires which should be as important as the desires of your loved ones.
  3. Take care of yourself. Body, soul and mind. Invest in a beauty budget to keep your body running optimally. Figure out what nourishes your soul. Self help books, yoga or meditation. Workout your brain by reading books or taking time to connect with people who challenge you mentally. If it nourishes your body, soul or mind then it is worth it!

The BEAUTY of a Chemical Peel

The Beauty of a Chemical Peel

By: Olivia Bergsrud

Before receiving a chemical peel clients usually have a lot of questions and it is important to consult a professional. I am here to give you some insight on the benefits…

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel uses different ingredients that work together to help speed up your skins exfoliation process and cell turnover rate. This also causes new skin to become visible, helping reach your skincare goals.

What do Chemical Peels treat?

Chemical peels are great for all skin types. We offer five different peels at our salon with different ingredients to help with your skin care needs.

Our peels may include:

•Glycolic Salicylic Azelaic which is great for very dry or oily skin.

•Mandelic is a great beginner peels for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

•Beta Clarity works to improve acne prone skin, large pores, and to control future breakouts.

•Hydra Radiance helps with fine lines, wrinkles, and hyper-pigmentation.

•Triple Transformation addresses all skin care needs aggressively.

You are able to mix and match all these peels so they are customized to your skin type.

How will my skin look after a Chemical Peel?
Your skin may look flushed for the next few hours. You may have light peeling or flaking for the next 3-5 days. We suggest moisturizing day and night to help with this process.

Why do I need a Chemical Peel?

Your skins natural cell turnover rate is every 28 days. By receiving chemical peels regularly this helps encourage this process to happen faster, giving you healthier skin. Whether you want to work on diminishing your fine lines or you just want to brighten your skins appearance a chemical peel will be your best friend!

I hope this helps you understand how amazing chemical peels are for all of your skin care goals. If you have any questions please give us a call or come in for a complimentary skin care consultation.

I look forward to meeting you all!

All the reasons you should be treating your scalp instead of your hair.

Another lovely day to talk about your HAIR. If you haven’t figured it out it is basically my all time favorite subject. Call me a hair nerd if you will but girlfriend knows what she is talking about okurrrrr?

Now that I got that out of my system I will be serious. If you have a nagging hair problem that you can’t seem to shake no matter what products you use or how well you follow your stylists instructions… it might actually be a scalp problem. Truthfully our hair growth begins inside our bodies and if you aren’t addressing your insides then the hair won’t be healthy especially after it has been on your head for a while, keratinized and exposed to the elements. So here are a few tips of how you can take care of your hair starting with your scalp.

You're invited to

  1. Healthy eating habits. If you are not getting the proper nutrition you won’t grow properly. Opinion on my part but I think you will find it backed up by science with a simple google sess. Make sure your body is not lacking in any essential vitamins. To boost your hair health specifically you may want to consider some of these gems…
    1. Swiss Chard is chock full of Biotin which will help you hair grow.
    2. Salmon is high in Omega-3 which can help with dandruff and dry scalp.
    3. Final recommendation, Spinach. It has vitamin C which can help regulate your scalps oil production.

There is A LOT more foods that are good for your hair health but if you want more info consider booking a complimentary consultation with your stylist.

  1. Olaplex. Everybody should be using Olaplex. It reconnects your broken disulfide bonds which is the lifeline of your hairs health. PLEASE do yourself a favor and ask your stylist about it. It should be in all your color services and you definitely need Olaplex step 2 at home. I recommend slathering it on your mid shafts and combing through. Wrap it up in a high bun or braid it to get it out of your way and go to bed. Let it work its magic baby. When you wake up your going to want to wash it out and condition as usual. Please don’t underestimate the power of this product. It is AMAZING.
  2. At least once a year you should be booking a service with your stylist to include a scalp and hair detox and condition treatment. I like to begin with a detox treatment to remove build up followed by a special shampoo to treat your scalp specifically. Then a stand alone Olaplex treatment and finished with a customized conditioning treatment. I will often use one deep conditioner on the scalp and a different one on the hair. This service is vital to removing unhealthy scalp and hair build up and making your hair feel totally young again.
  3. My last tip is in your shower. Make sure the shampoo and conditioner you are using is professional quality. The ultimate hair killer is drugstore shampoo and conditioner. I can not impress upon you enough how dishonest the unprofessional beauty industry is about their products and ingredients. They are not closely regulated by the FDA and I can practically guarantee contain ingredients that are harmful to you. YES even if it is labeled all natural, organic, sulfate free etc. Do not put that on your body to sink into your blood stream. I am of the opinion that continued use of these products can cause permanent hair loss in old age among other internal medical issues. Secondarily the shampoo you pick should be aimed at addressing your scalp specific concerns and your conditioner is what you use to take care of your hair. Your stylist can help you choose the best combination.

With all the love I have I wish you the most healthful and happy hair journey and I hope to see you in the salon very soon.

xoxo,

Love

The Power of Clear

Bear with me. I swear this post is not all about hair. You will have to trust me for a moment on this one…

As a Hairstylist my inspiration for this post struck as I decided to try something crazy at the salon today. I had a client who was talking about how her blonde hair just seemed dull. Most blondes do not want to be “yellow” or “brassy”. To achieve that cool blonde look we as stylists will usually apply a toner. Also knowns as a glaze. That toner usually has… well. A tone. For cancelling yellows you choose purple for orange you choose blue. Are you still with me? I don’t mean to geek out on you but this was the process of my epiphany.  So here I go. Ash based toners tend to have a more dense color molecule. That means even if you choose the lightest possible toner it will tone down the yellow AND sometimes the brightness as well. It is hard to achieve one fully without the other. To cancel out brass and keep that light bright effect is the stuff of pure Hairstylist genius. This is why people pay us the big bucks.

Suddenly it hit me. There is a product that most color lines have these days and its clear. Well typically I would use that to add a shine or liven up a clients ends. BAM. Liven up and maybe BRIGHTEN up??? I took the plunge. The results speak for themselves. Check out these photos and please excuse the background. They are not professionally created. I was just to excited about the results to let her out the door without a photo.

Long story short. It worked! I was giddy at the results. As I reflected on how excited I was and what a hair dork I am a phrase popped in my head. “The power of clear.”

Clear is after all synonymous with the word cleanse. When you have your aura or a room cleansed your just having it cleaned of all the energy that occurred there so you could start fresh and fill your space with positivity and light.

I cleared my desk. After that I went and cleared my stylist area and the sink. I felt so good I decided to do something else. I set out to clear my mind. I realize this is a deep decision and that I am about to embark upon a journey that will probably take years. I will clear my mind of childhood baggage, unfounded insecurities, negative self talk and basically whatever else I can think of that may be weighing me down. I will undoubtedly report back on my progress and hiccups on my way to clarity but I hope you stay tuned. You can expect brutal honesty above all else.

Maybe with such a clear plate I will be free to enjoy life on my terms as a Stylist, Salon owner, mom and partner or hell as ME clean and clear of labels. I would love to hear your perspective on ” The power of Clear ” and what it could mean for you. Feel free to comment your own thoughts and epiphanies on the subject or private message me via email heather@pommespa.com.

Until next time.

5 Reasons Why you should get your hair and makeup done on NYE.

There are a million reasons I believe we should be getting our hair and makeup done professionally at least 4 times a year but New Years Eve is especially important. The truth is that it has much less to do with they way you look and a lot to do with the way you feel. How you feel on New Years Eve really sets the tone for the entire year. My personal advice would be DO SOMETHING. Anything really. Even if your plan is to stay home and put your kids to bed on time, try to make it special. Maybe a New Years bed time book, a new tradition with your kids or a home date with your partner after the kids are down for the night. Maybe you need to make more time for yourself and a little alone time is just the ticket… All of these options are more than viable and can catapult you into a succesful and happy year ahead.

cropped-red-head-updo.jpg

If you are going out I would like to suggest a New Years Eve pampering sess. Hair, Makeup, Nails WHATEVER makes YOU feel good. New Years Eve should be about self-care. There are a hundred holidays for everybody else. Hell. Even on your birthday there is usually friends and family who want to celebrate your life with you. New Years Eve though, is an unclaimed holiday. Take it for yourselves!

low updo

With that in mind here are 5 reasons why you should get your hair and makeup professionally done if you are going out on New Years Eve.

  1. New Year Beautiful You. It’s important to feel like the most beautiful version of ourselves every once in a while. While we can get busy with life, kids, commuting, careers, hobbies, friends and families it is really important to just feel good about YOUrself. Let a professional help. They know what they are doing. If you have a regular hairstylist you already trust then start there. They know your style and what you think is beautiful. Let them make your inner beauty shine out and start the year off right.
  2. You can often use your shampoo / blow out as an opportunity to learn something. Ask your stylist for some tips on how to recreate the look yourself. Whenever you take the time to put some effort into your appearance you give the impression to the world that you give a sh#@. Sometimes that can prove invaluable. When you are trying to advance in your career or teach your kids about self-care and hygiene for example. I know it is easier to roll out of bed and let your hair air dry and trust me I do myself at least 95% of the time but this year I’m thinking I can try to take care of me a little bit more. That starts with giving myself the sleep I need to get up early enough to take care of my body.
  3. The salon is a really valuable networking tool. It might not pop into your head as the first place you would go to meet people but I can’t tell you have many bonds have been forged in a hair salon. You would be surprised who you can come across by spending a couple of hours at the salon. Are you in real estate? Somebody the next chair over might be desperate to sell their house and looking FOR YOU! Need family photos taken? Your hairstylist or Makeup Artist knows everybody. Strike up simple, friendly conversations with kindred spirits and let that carry you right into the New Year.
  4. Good Energy. If you love your local salon then that place should be full of good energy which is the best place to be when you are getting ready to ring in a New Year. Good conversations, good vibes, great hair, beautiful makeup and a PERFECT New Year. Let it all rub off on you and then carry that to your party or date and revel in all that is good as you celebrate your way through New Years Eve.
  5. Relaxation. The salon experience can be as relaxing as it is fun. There is nothing better than entering one of your favorite places and feeling completely relaxed and at home. Let your stylist take you into their hands while you sit back and enjoy the company while you relax it out. Emerge beautiful, bright and totally chill. So ready to take on another year.

Blonde Beauty
Makeup by Ashlyn Brandenburg. Hair by Heather Leslie Tabor.

My last piece of advice is to choose a stylist that you trust. It might not be the night to use that Groupon you bought on a whim for a really cheap haircut. If your going to get the most out of the experience you have to feel comfortable enough to let your stylist take care of you. A really good stylist should be doing an in-depth consultation the first time they see you. If you’re visiting someone new on NYE just take your time talking with them before hand and get comfortable with their plans for your look.

Other than that have fun, party hard, enjoy your life and Happy New Year!

Current Nail Obsession…

I would like to take a moment to discuss something with you all… My current NAIL OBSESSION. I can’t stop. Heres the thing. It can definately be considered a want as opossed to a NEED. While this may be true for some it’s really not for me and maybe not for you either.

  1. My job requires that I look relatively put together. A simple manicure can really pull together a more casual outfit and make you look a little “polished.” (haha)
  2. If done appropriately it can protect the health and well being of your natural nails. Obviously this does not apply if your allowing your stylist to use a drill on your natural nail or if your using low quality polishes which tend to be chock full of harmful ingredients.
  3. Bye bye breakage. I have nails that love to split or crack on the edges. Its annoying. How can I EVER grow my nails out if they are constantly breaking forcing me to trim the excess. Because, well an uneven nail is one of the worlds most annoying things. A nice basic polish or SNS can help you grow your nails and minimize breakage.

If your still with me then professional nail care is probably more of  a requirement for you too. No worries! Introducing my current NAIL OBSESSION… Smith and Cult nail polish.

Smith and Cult why we support them

I would like to propose bringing back the healthiest possible form of professional nail care. The traditional manicure. Add the spa like qualities we have come to know and love today like massage and a glass of wine and presto. You have the healthiest possible way to professionaly care for your nails and keep them safe and happy. Take home a bottle of Smith and Cult polish in the color you chose and apply touch ups. VOILA your traditional mani will last alot longer!

Your Welcome. 😉

P.S. This polish is to die for on your toes too.
