There are 3 main reasons our hair feels bad. Environmental, internal, and chemical damage. Today we want to talk about the big one in our area. Environmental damage. The hard water here causes a build up like you have never seen before. The end result is dry, damaged, straw like hair texture. The best products don’t solve the problem. Your stylist can’t seem to fix it. You have tried EVERYTHING! Lets get intentional about targeting hard water specifically Here are 3 of the best things you could do to battle the hard water problem you may be having with your hair…
Having a water softener obviously helps but you should know the damage you see on your hair from hard water is rooted in the mineral build up the hard water causes. When you soften the water your system most likely uses sodium which is another mineral. While it helps you are still adding mineral content to your hair which is why in certain areas you will need more than a softener to fix your hard water hair problem. I recommend a filter for your shower head. They are easily attachable and will help to filter some of the mineral from your water before it ever touches your hair.
The filter is not enough on it’s own. You will need to manually remove the build up at least once every other month using an ultra cleansing shampoo. I would like to recommend products that use essential oils etc. to remove build up. Harsher clarifying shampoos have molecules that scratch your cuticle layer and can cause more damage than it helps. Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo is on my recommended list. It targets mineral build up specifically without stripping your hair of it’s color, and natural oils. I also like Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash. Kevin Murphy is always doing something to nourish your hair while it does it’s main job.
Protect your hair by getting a glaze in the salon. Glazes are not super expensive, don’t take a lot of time, end with a gorgeous blow out, and protect your hair not only from hard water mineral build up but other harsh environmental damage like the sun. Anybody can get a glaze whether they color their hair or not. They make glazes in every shade from clear to bright red. You can have fun with the shade or keep it clean and clear. Your glaze will also add shine and luminosity as an added benefit.
I can think of 100 other ways to protect and cure hard water mineral build up on your hair but I wanted to focus mainly on these 3 for today. Mostly I recommend having a Hairstylist who is in charge of your hairs health and well being as well as it’s color, cut, and style. Your stylist should be able to recommend home care at different points during the year to keep your hair as healthy, and happy as possible.
If you are interested in starting a home care hair regimen to solve any hair problem you may have please feel free to reach out to us at Pomme Salon. Happy Fall sweet clients and friends. With a new season comes change. In other places you watch the leaves change color and slip gracefully to their crunchy grave on the ground, but here in Texas we bust out boots and sweaters on Monday, and slip into a tank top on Tuesday. We wonder if we will sweat through our Halloween Costumes or have to ruin them with a sweater. Long story short the one thing you can bet on is things are changing. People like to change their hair, their clothes, their flavors…. Queue Pumpkin Spice Season. Here are some Autumn ideas for fun little changes you may want to make. Spoiler alert all of these ideas are GOOD FOR YOU!
Everybody wants to change their hair color when the seasons change. That is a given, but with all the heaters coming on we suck every bit of moisture out of the air. Couple that with the summer damage we have done, and you hair is probably fried. I would like to suggest that it is the PERFECT time of year for Hair Treatments. Put that moisture back in there baby.
Change up the product girl! It is time to bust out your hair oils, smoothing products and thicker conditioners. If you get oily hair, have fine hair or a lot of damage I would like to introduce my new favorite line of products… Hairstory is a whole new way of shampooing. One product to rule them all. No more Shampoo and then Conditioner. I can only share my experience. The non suds nature was odd for me at first but once my hair dried I could not stop touching it. I knew this product was amazing, and the shampoo brush is the perfect perk. Dare I say my split ends are better… Yes I do. It is a pro product so you will need a link to buy. I will share mine here for you to take a look. xoxo Hairstory Link
Everybody wants to go darker for the fall but when I think fall I immediately see Pumpkin Spice, Caramel, Cinnamon, fallen leaves, Hot Chocolate… I think warmth. Ask your Hairstylist if you have the skin tone to go in a copper, red or golden direction instead of just plain dark. You can always do this in a semi permanent which will allow for easy change if you want to go back after the seasons change.
I know it seems typical to grow your hair out to keep you warm during the winter, but consider going in the opposite direction. A textured bob paired with a beautiful scarf and some chunky earrings is a very trendy way to spend your fall season.
This suggestion is only hair related in the sense that I own a small local Hair Salon in Dripping Springs, but I am going to throw it out there anyways. As Christmas approaches SHOP LOCAL! Your small local businesses need your support more than the typical chains do. Gift cards, stocking stuffers, packages, products and so much more unique, and interesting finds await you in that sweet local shop you may not have noticed before. You can expect to find a local business guide for Christmas shopping in my next article.
Until then. Thank you for reading all about the 5 Autumn Ideas I had for your hair. As always I am available for all of your questions, comments, and ideas for future articles. I hope you are having a wonderful Fall Season so far.
Hey sweet clients. Here is what has been on my mind lately. Things that have grown up around me and taken over my life. Somehow we accrue things that we want and believe will make us happy. Over time we build a life of things that we thought would fill us up. Thing after thing is cast aside and a new thing is brought in it’s place and somehow the void is not filled. We have also heaved ourselves a hefty portion of work to go along with that emptiness. All those things have to be taken care of, cleaned up and dealt with. I have been on a mission to replace some of the things I think I want with experiences instead. I have the idea that what I will take away from those genuine moments I spend with other people is more personal fulfillment then I could ever find in my things.
Don’t get me wrong. Nice things are nice. I would much rather purchase a quality item that I love and will last than anything else. By all means if you have a physical need fill it… but is it a need? I like to play would I rather. I am looking at a super cute coffee mug and I want it real bad. Would I rather have that mug or use that $15 towards a pedicure that I could go and experience with my BFF or one of my sisters. Would I rather use that money to buy myself a drink at happy hour with my amazing co workers. Would I rather use that extra money towards a relaxing massage or facial. The mug is nice. I have 15 of them at home sure but this one is shaped like a cat. It feels like a must. Well hell eventually you find yourself cleaning a sink full of coffee mugs in the morning before you go to work and wish like hell you had gotten that pedicure instead.
This is just a theory I am testing out at the moment. I would really like you to join the experiment and share your “experiences” (pun feverishly intended) with me. You can reach me via email at email@example.com or by commenting on this post. I can’t wait to hear what you did and your thoughts on if you felt more fulfilled afterwards.
I personally am working on integrating this method in my business by making my hair appointments more of an experience my for my clients. Every color appointment comes with a facial while your color processes. You wont have time to work or check your phone because you will be busy experiencing the appointment from start to finish. I am thinking of gently suggesting that my clients leave their devices in their bags and focus on the experience but I have not gotten there yet. I would love to catch your thoughts on that idea as well though.
At my salon I keep a healthy vibe flowing between services, products, hair and skin care lines. I carry an 8 free line of nail polishes by Smith and Cult and I use Kevin Murphy hair color which is both ammonia and PPD free.
It is safe to say that I make it my business to keep my clients “healthy”. I advise against the use of drug store hair care and cosmetic products because they are not closely regulated by the FDA and truth be told you have NO idea what you are getting in those products. They can legally state things on their packaging like “all natural”, “ammonia free”, and “sulfate free” even if the products ARE NOT! It kind of baffles me the level of lie at which they are capable of legally reaching with their labeling.
Long story short I do my research and I know what is good for my clients to be using and what they shouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole. Recently I was chatting it up with a co-worker and amazing Esthetician and the conversation got me thinking… is natural always healthy?
People are often allergic to nature. The cedar in Austin is no joke people. I know somebody who is allergic to pineapple and I am always hearing about people with life threatening nut allergies. These things all exist in nature. Right!
My friend made a solid point. She said something about the things that exist in our bodies. Are they not natural? She listed off a couple of ingredients that she knew people were wary of that were found in our bodies NATURALLY. These ingredients do not grow from the ground so a lot of her clients would question the product for how “natural” it was. So I looked some stuff up… Gingko seeds contain a naturally occurring neurotoxin. Bamboo shoots have a natural toxin called cyanogenic glycoside. These items grew from the ground and exist in nature but do I want them on my skin or scalp?
Also, why would we willingly choose not to make use the modern marvels of medical science at our disposal? You obviously must take what information you can find and do your research accordingly, but if they can create something that could act as a synthetic replica or extract and use something found in and created by your own body then why the hell not? If you are worried about it you will need to research what ingredients are made by your body that you could use more of for your skins health but barring any crazy findings why does the ingredient have to be what society considers “natural” to be good for your skin or hair? If you have a talented Stylist or Esthetician they can guide you in a healthy direction and tell you which ingredients are good or bad for you.
Don’t just buy into the natural always = healthy craze. Do your research and consult a professional to make the healthiest choices for your body and its needs. You are unique and need a custom skin and hair care routine that fits you specifically. Your stylist knows you, they see you regularly. They will see your body change and your hair and skin make shifts. If they find something outside their scope they will be sure to point you in the right medical direction. As long as your stylist is qualified they are sure to be a valuable resource in your journey to optimal health.
As always we are here for you at Pomme Salon if you need an amazing Stylist or Esthitician.
Another lovely day to talk about your HAIR. If you haven’t figured it out it is basically my all time favorite subject. Call me a hair nerd if you will but girlfriend knows what she is talking about okurrrrr?
Now that I got that out of my system I will be serious. If you have a nagging hair problem that you can’t seem to shake no matter what products you use or how well you follow your stylists instructions… it might actually be a scalp problem. Truthfully our hair growth begins inside our bodies and if you aren’t addressing your insides then the hair won’t be healthy especially after it has been on your head for a while, keratinized and exposed to the elements. So here are a few tips of how you can take care of your hair starting with your scalp.
Healthy eating habits. If you are not getting the proper nutrition you won’t grow properly. Opinion on my part but I think you will find it backed up by science with a simple google sess. Make sure your body is not lacking in any essential vitamins. To boost your hair health specifically you may want to consider some of these gems…
Swiss Chard is chock full of Biotin which will help you hair grow.
Salmon is high in Omega-3 which can help with dandruff and dry scalp.
Final recommendation, Spinach. It has vitamin C which can help regulate your scalps oil production.
There is A LOT more foods that are good for your hair health but if you want more info consider booking a complimentary consultation with your stylist.
Olaplex. Everybody should be using Olaplex. It reconnects your broken disulfide bonds which is the lifeline of your hairs health. PLEASE do yourself a favor and ask your stylist about it. It should be in all your color services and you definitely need Olaplex step 2 at home. I recommend slathering it on your mid shafts and combing through. Wrap it up in a high bun or braid it to get it out of your way and go to bed. Let it work its magic baby. When you wake up your going to want to wash it out and condition as usual. Please don’t underestimate the power of this product. It is AMAZING.
At least once a year you should be booking a service with your stylist to include a scalp and hair detox and condition treatment. I like to begin with a detox treatment to remove build up followed by a special shampoo to treat your scalp specifically. Then a stand alone Olaplex treatment and finished with a customized conditioning treatment. I will often use one deep conditioner on the scalp and a different one on the hair. This service is vital to removing unhealthy scalp and hair build up and making your hair feel totally young again.
My last tip is in your shower. Make sure the shampoo and conditioner you are using is professional quality. The ultimate hair killer is drugstore shampoo and conditioner. I can not impress upon you enough how dishonest the unprofessional beauty industry is about their products and ingredients. They are not closely regulated by the FDA and I can practically guarantee contain ingredients that are harmful to you. YES even if it is labeled all natural, organic, sulfate free etc. Do not put that on your body to sink into your blood stream. I am of the opinion that continued use of these products can cause permanent hair loss in old age among other internal medical issues. Secondarily the shampoo you pick should be aimed at addressing your scalp specific concerns and your conditioner is what you use to take care of your hair. Your stylist can help you choose the best combination.
Icy Blonde Platinum Haircolor
Blonde Beauty Baby.
Subtle balayage blonde = WINNING.
With all the love I have I wish you the most healthful and happy hair journey and I hope to see you in the salon very soon.
Hey there ORANGE lipstick here. Just checking in with all my bright and shining glory. Ever thought about slipping a little bit of this magic right on those perfect lips? No. Oh. That’s really sad. Lets talk about that…
There are a lot of choices out there when it comes to your lips. Most people choose to shy away from colors that are very bright or obvious. I am going to shine a light on your choices by breaking it down for you technically because there is a science to your color choices.
Introducing the color wheel. A basic color wheel consists of your primary colors. Red, blue and yellow. All other colors come from mixing these three OG’s. When you start to put these colors together you can see that you get your purples greens and oranges. The colors on either side of any specific color are called complimentary colors. This means that they look good together.
The next thing to know is that there are different tones. They can really be categorized into 3 areas. There are cool tones, warm tones and neutral tones. The key to finding your PERFECT LIP COLOR is to figure out what your skin’s under tone is. I have a pink undertone in my skin. This is why I flush easily and have some skin sensitivities. This is common in people with fair skin.
The next tidbit is that anything on the yellow, orange and red side are warm tones. Pink is actually red and white which means there is a warmth to that tone as well. Since pink is basically red that means I actually have a warm undertone despite how fair-skinned I am.
Are you totally bored yet? Hang in there because I promise you will really appreciate this when you find your signature color. So if you look at the color on either side of red which we have established is my skin’s undertone you can see that the complimentary colors are purple and orange. So you have seen me in Orange lipstick. Let’s test the theory with a little photo of my lips decked out in purple. The key here is to select a purple on the warm side. Anything to blue will actually be cool which is the opposite of my skins warm undertone. Blue is fun and I rock it on occasion but I admit it does not look as good as the purple and orange lipsticks I use.
Surprise! Doesn’t it look good. I know you had your doubts. I’m not mad. Now that you know you can determine what your skin’s undertone is you can try out all the lips shades you never thought you could wear! For example if you have that olive skin it is actually a green undertone. Try a golden lipstick shade or you will be surprised to find that a blue or teal lip color might look good on you! I know it’s daring but you can try it out at home on a Sunday when nobody is watching.
Ultimately determining your undertone is key to finding your complimentary colors. If you don’t know how to start all you have to do is book a consultation with your stylist. They can help you discover all kinds of fun things about your look. This same concept is transferable to your hair and clothes to. You can book your consultation on our website at http://www.pommespa.com with any of our amazing stylists. Until then Peace. Love. Pomme.
Bear with me. I swear this post is not all about hair. You will have to trust me for a moment on this one…
As a Hairstylist my inspiration for this post struck as I decided to try something crazy at the salon today. I had a client who was talking about how her blonde hair just seemed dull. Most blondes do not want to be “yellow” or “brassy”. To achieve that cool blonde look we as stylists will usually apply a toner. Also knowns as a glaze. That toner usually has… well. A tone. For cancelling yellows you choose purple for orange you choose blue. Are you still with me? I don’t mean to geek out on you but this was the process of my epiphany. So here I go. Ash based toners tend to have a more dense color molecule. That means even if you choose the lightest possible toner it will tone down the yellow AND sometimes the brightness as well. It is hard to achieve one fully without the other. To cancel out brass and keep that light bright effect is the stuff of pure Hairstylist genius. This is why people pay us the big bucks.
Suddenly it hit me. There is a product that most color lines have these days and its clear. Well typically I would use that to add a shine or liven up a clients ends. BAM. Liven up and maybe BRIGHTEN up??? I took the plunge. The results speak for themselves. Check out these photos and please excuse the background. They are not professionally created. I was just to excited about the results to let her out the door without a photo.
Long story short. It worked! I was giddy at the results. As I reflected on how excited I was and what a hair dork I am a phrase popped in my head. “The power of clear.”
Clear is after all synonymous with the word cleanse. When you have your aura or a room cleansed your just having it cleaned of all the energy that occurred there so you could start fresh and fill your space with positivity and light.
I cleared my desk. After that I went and cleared my stylist area and the sink. I felt so good I decided to do something else. I set out to clear my mind. I realize this is a deep decision and that I am about to embark upon a journey that will probably take years. I will clear my mind of childhood baggage, unfounded insecurities, negative self talk and basically whatever else I can think of that may be weighing me down. I will undoubtedly report back on my progress and hiccups on my way to clarity but I hope you stay tuned. You can expect brutal honesty above all else.
Maybe with such a clear plate I will be free to enjoy life on my terms as a Stylist, Salon owner, mom and partner or hell as ME clean and clear of labels. I would love to hear your perspective on ” The power of Clear ” and what it could mean for you. Feel free to comment your own thoughts and epiphanies on the subject or private message me via email firstname.lastname@example.org.
There are a million reasons I believe we should be getting our hair and makeup done professionally at least 4 times a year but New Years Eve is especially important. The truth is that it has much less to do with they way you look and a lot to do with the way you feel. How you feel on New Years Eve really sets the tone for the entire year. My personal advice would be DO SOMETHING. Anything really. Even if your plan is to stay home and put your kids to bed on time, try to make it special. Maybe a New Years bed time book, a new tradition with your kids or a home date with your partner after the kids are down for the night. Maybe you need to make more time for yourself and a little alone time is just the ticket… All of these options are more than viable and can catapult you into a succesful and happy year ahead.
If you are going out I would like to suggest a New Years Eve pampering sess. Hair, Makeup, Nails WHATEVER makes YOU feel good. New Years Eve should be about self-care. There are a hundred holidays for everybody else. Hell. Even on your birthday there is usually friends and family who want to celebrate your life with you. New Years Eve though, is an unclaimed holiday. Take it for yourselves!
With that in mind here are 5 reasons why you should get your hair and makeup professionally done if you are going out on New Years Eve.
New Year Beautiful You. It’s important to feel like the most beautiful version of ourselves every once in a while. While we can get busy with life, kids, commuting, careers, hobbies, friends and families it is really important to just feel good about YOUrself. Let a professional help. They know what they are doing. If you have a regular hairstylist you already trust then start there. They know your style and what you think is beautiful. Let them make your inner beauty shine out and start the year off right.
You can often use your shampoo / blow out as an opportunity to learn something. Ask your stylist for some tips on how to recreate the look yourself. Whenever you take the time to put some effort into your appearance you give the impression to the world that you give a sh#@. Sometimes that can prove invaluable. When you are trying to advance in your career or teach your kids about self-care and hygiene for example. I know it is easier to roll out of bed and let your hair air dry and trust me I do myself at least 95% of the time but this year I’m thinking I can try to take care of me a little bit more. That starts with giving myself the sleep I need to get up early enough to take care of my body.
The salon is a really valuable networking tool. It might not pop into your head as the first place you would go to meet people but I can’t tell you have many bonds have been forged in a hair salon. You would be surprised who you can come across by spending a couple of hours at the salon. Are you in real estate? Somebody the next chair over might be desperate to sell their house and looking FOR YOU! Need family photos taken? Your hairstylist or Makeup Artist knows everybody. Strike up simple, friendly conversations with kindred spirits and let that carry you right into the New Year.
Good Energy. If you love your local salon then that place should be full of good energy which is the best place to be when you are getting ready to ring in a New Year. Good conversations, good vibes, great hair, beautiful makeup and a PERFECT New Year. Let it all rub off on you and then carry that to your party or date and revel in all that is good as you celebrate your way through New Years Eve.
Relaxation. The salon experience can be as relaxing as it is fun. There is nothing better than entering one of your favorite places and feeling completely relaxed and at home. Let your stylist take you into their hands while you sit back and enjoy the company while you relax it out. Emerge beautiful, bright and totally chill. So ready to take on another year.
My last piece of advice is to choose a stylist that you trust. It might not be the night to use that Groupon you bought on a whim for a really cheap haircut. If your going to get the most out of the experience you have to feel comfortable enough to let your stylist take care of you. A really good stylist should be doing an in-depth consultation the first time they see you. If you’re visiting someone new on NYE just take your time talking with them before hand and get comfortable with their plans for your look.
Other than that have fun, party hard, enjoy your life and Happy New Year!
