There are 3 main reasons our hair feels bad. Environmental, internal, and chemical damage. Today we want to talk about the big one in our area. Environmental damage. The hard water here causes a build up like you have never seen before. The end result is dry, damaged, straw like hair texture. The best products don’t solve the problem. Your stylist can’t seem to fix it. You have tried EVERYTHING! Lets get intentional about targeting hard water specifically Here are 3 of the best things you could do to battle the hard water problem you may be having with your hair…
Having a water softener obviously helps but you should know the damage you see on your hair from hard water is rooted in the mineral build up the hard water causes. When you soften the water your system most likely uses sodium which is another mineral. While it helps you are still adding mineral content to your hair which is why in certain areas you will need more than a softener to fix your hard water hair problem. I recommend a filter for your shower head. They are easily attachable and will help to filter some of the mineral from your water before it ever touches your hair.
The filter is not enough on it’s own. You will need to manually remove the build up at least once every other month using an ultra cleansing shampoo. I would like to recommend products that use essential oils etc. to remove build up. Harsher clarifying shampoos have molecules that scratch your cuticle layer and can cause more damage than it helps. Malibu Hard Water Wellness Shampoo is on my recommended list. It targets mineral build up specifically without stripping your hair of it’s color, and natural oils. I also like Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash. Kevin Murphy is always doing something to nourish your hair while it does it’s main job.
Protect your hair by getting a glaze in the salon. Glazes are not super expensive, don’t take a lot of time, end with a gorgeous blow out, and protect your hair not only from hard water mineral build up but other harsh environmental damage like the sun. Anybody can get a glaze whether they color their hair or not. They make glazes in every shade from clear to bright red. You can have fun with the shade or keep it clean and clear. Your glaze will also add shine and luminosity as an added benefit.
I can think of 100 other ways to protect and cure hard water mineral build up on your hair but I wanted to focus mainly on these 3 for today. Mostly I recommend having a Hairstylist who is in charge of your hairs health and well being as well as it’s color, cut, and style. Your stylist should be able to recommend home care at different points during the year to keep your hair as healthy, and happy as possible.
If you are interested in starting a home care hair regimen to solve any hair problem you may have please feel free to reach out to us at Pomme Salon. We always offer free consultations, and advice to anybody, and everybody whether they are a client or not because we care about hair so freaking much!
We have all had bad skin days at one point or another. Your skin can be too dry, oily, uneven or maybe you’ve even had acne breakouts. Here’s the real question…what do we expect from our cleanser? You may think our cleanser should just be able to remove make-up and dirt leaving our skin feeling soft and healthy, but you could be using the wrong cleanser for your face type. Most people don’t realize your skin type actually changes. Be it weather, change in hormones, stress or maybe just age. Your cleanser (and moisturizer) should be able to keep up. I’m going to talk about 3 different skin types and the 3 cleansers your should be using at home for optimal results.
Skin Type 1-Dry Skin
You’ve seen it, its flaky and splotchy, make-up doesn’t look its best and it MAY be your cleanser. Hydrating cream and oil based cleansers are excellent for dry skin but did you know that exfoliating may be the most beneficial thing you can do for your skin type. I would recommend the Le Mieux Exfoliating Cleanser. It is specifically designed to cleanse and remove excess build up of dead skin cells.
Skin Type 2-Oily Skin
Oily skin is shiny, feels greasy, and usually your pores are very large. You might even have clogged pores and blackheads which makes it difficult to apply make-up. It may feel like it’s actually sliding off your face. Most people go straight for a stronger often gel based cleanser, but did you know as counterproductive as it may seem an oil based cleanser it the best thing you could use. Your skin is over producing oil because you keep stripping it thinking you are overly dry. This signals your body to produce even more oil. If you stop that vicious cycle and give your skin a little oil your body will halt its oil production believing you don’t need anymore. Leaving your skin feeling clean and hydrated. I would recommend Le Mieux Phyto-Marine Cleansing Lotion.
Skin Type 3-Combination and Acne prone skin
Combination skin is tricky. Acne happens for a million reasons, sometimes we never really know why it happens. But since it does, it may be difficult to find the best cleanser. The truth is there may not be a one size fits all solution for your skin type. My best recommendation is to alternate between an exfoliating cleanser once a week to remove dead skin cells which cause dry skin to build up, and a foam based cleanser to remove excess oil without stripping your skin the rest of the time. I would recommend Le Mieux Peptide Foam Cleanser.
If you are experiencing dry skin, oily skin, acne or any other skin concerns please consider taking them to a professional esthetician. We can provide several services such as Dermaplaning, Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, LED, Micro current, Serum treatments and custom masks. I would be more than happy to help you with any skin concerns.
Happy Fall sweet clients and friends. With a new season comes change. In other places you watch the leaves change color and slip gracefully to their crunchy grave on the ground, but here in Texas we bust out boots and sweaters on Monday, and slip into a tank top on Tuesday. We wonder if we will sweat through our Halloween Costumes or have to ruin them with a sweater. Long story short the one thing you can bet on is things are changing. People like to change their hair, their clothes, their flavors…. Queue Pumpkin Spice Season. Here are some Autumn ideas for fun little changes you may want to make. Spoiler alert all of these ideas are GOOD FOR YOU!
Everybody wants to change their hair color when the seasons change. That is a given, but with all the heaters coming on we suck every bit of moisture out of the air. Couple that with the summer damage we have done, and you hair is probably fried. I would like to suggest that it is the PERFECT time of year for Hair Treatments. Put that moisture back in there baby.
Change up the product girl! It is time to bust out your hair oils, smoothing products and thicker conditioners. If you get oily hair, have fine hair or a lot of damage I would like to introduce my new favorite line of products… Hairstory is a whole new way of shampooing. One product to rule them all. No more Shampoo and then Conditioner. I can only share my experience. The non suds nature was odd for me at first but once my hair dried I could not stop touching it. I knew this product was amazing, and the shampoo brush is the perfect perk. Dare I say my split ends are better… Yes I do. It is a pro product so you will need a link to buy. I will share mine here for you to take a look. xoxo Hairstory Link
Everybody wants to go darker for the fall but when I think fall I immediately see Pumpkin Spice, Caramel, Cinnamon, fallen leaves, Hot Chocolate… I think warmth. Ask your Hairstylist if you have the skin tone to go in a copper, red or golden direction instead of just plain dark. You can always do this in a semi permanent which will allow for easy change if you want to go back after the seasons change.
I know it seems typical to grow your hair out to keep you warm during the winter, but consider going in the opposite direction. A textured bob paired with a beautiful scarf and some chunky earrings is a very trendy way to spend your fall season.
This suggestion is only hair related in the sense that I own a small local Hair Salon in Dripping Springs, but I am going to throw it out there anyways. As Christmas approaches SHOP LOCAL! Your small local businesses need your support more than the typical chains do. Gift cards, stocking stuffers, packages, products and so much more unique, and interesting finds await you in that sweet local shop you may not have noticed before. You can expect to find a local business guide for Christmas shopping in my next article.
Until then. Thank you for reading all about the 5 Autumn Ideas I had for your hair. As always I am available for all of your questions, comments, and ideas for future articles. I hope you are having a wonderful Fall Season so far.
Hey there curly girl… I see you. Silently struggling over there. The truth is whether you choose to see it or not your hair is glorious. Many women want your hair, but few are blessed with it. The trick is learning how to harness all of that energy. Once you get that down it is much easier to tame the wild spirit your hair possesses and make it look “on purpose”. There are several steps to this magic. Don’t be overwhelmed because a lot of the process is not recurring, and eventually your hair should be very low maintenance.
Step 1: Acceptance is key. Curly hair is many things in addition to absolutely gorgeous. It is frizzy by nature, it is not even, it is wild, and it is NOT SMOOTH. As long as you are expecting your hair to be something that it is not you will be unhappy with it. I know it is disappointing to have expectations that can’t be met, but if you can see that your hair does not have to be smooth or even to be breath taking you can find a place of peace about your hair texture, and eventually learn to love it.
Step 2: Find a Curly Hair Stylist. Someone who has experience with cutting Curly Hair. A good Haircut makes a world of difference to Curly Girls. This is really important… most of the time anybody who is practiced and experienced enough will not be cheap. There are always exceptions to any rule, and I am sure there are many stylists who are amazing Curly Cutters but the odds are not in your favor. The good news is once you get your first appointment under your belt your Stylist can maintain the cut with a Dry Trim which is often less expensive then a full Haircut including shampoo and style.
Step 3: Let go of the idea that your Haircut has to be “even”. Curly hair is NOT EVEN. I call each little curl a ” Curl Family “. Some Curls are tighter and some are looser. Curls are like snowflakes no two Curl Families are exactly the same. If you apply tension and pull them straight down some will be longer and some will be shorter. If you pull it down and cut it even when the curl families spring up some will be super short and some will be longer depending on the curl pattern. TRUST ME on this… you do not want your hair cut “even”. If you feel that everything needs to be even, in order or completely balanced you will struggle endlessly with your curly hair.
Step 4: Don’t wash your hair every day. Curly hair is dry by nature. You need some of those natural oils to work their way down the hair shaft to keep your hair from being so dry. Instead just get in the shower and wet your hair. You can even condition the ends and comb with a wide tooth comb but skip the shampoo.
Step 5: Water activates your curl pattern so if your not a morning shower person keep a spray bottle of water handy to wet your curls and allow those curl families to reform after you have slept on them all night.
Step 6: Stop brushing your hair so much. Before your shower get a traditional hair brush and really brush that hair from scalp to ends. This will more evenly distribute your natural oils. The brush will pick oil up from the scalp and transfer it down the hair shaft to your dry ends. Cue the celebration! Then you can hop in the shower and reform your curl pattern. You can also detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb every time you condition. Other than these two moments you should not be brushing your curly hair at all. Brushing breaks up your curl families which causes all the frizz.
I know it can be frustrating to get used to a hair type that you never thought you wanted but if we can circle back to acceptance it really is the key to a long and happy life with your curls.
This month I wanted to discuss one of the most important branding decisions I have ever made. To reduce the footprint within the beauty industry. That is a HUGE task and I honestly had no idea where to start. Here is what I did know. I wanted my business to mean something bigger than just beauty. I truly wanted to make a difference with this massive undertaking I had embarked upon. I did a ton of thinking and A LOT of research before I made up my mind. Ultimately I thought what could be bigger than taking care of the planet we live on!
We all know that we are making a foot print around here. Wether we are choosing to live obliviously or accept the cause and effect the fact remains that we are creating an environmental disturbance. We are creating items that nature was not designed to contain such as plastic. I set out to build a brand that promoted awareness within in the beauty industry about waste, recycling and making sustainable choices. It has been a long road and I definitely get push back. People inevitably want to do what is easy as opposed to what is right. Being the kind of leader who makes my Stylists think about our choices has not always been easy. It also requires a very special team, but… I have found it and boy are we making waves!
First I committed to Beauty Brand Kevin Murphy which has an ENTIRE web page dedicated to ” The Choices We Make” which is heavily littered with sustainability and waste reduction efforts. It’s also a plus that Kevin Murphy is a very effective hair care line. Their treatments are amazing and all of their products work wonders in so many ways I can’t even begin. That is a whole other article.
All of your Stylists here at Pomme are also Certified Sustainable by Green Circle Salons. We recover and re purpose 95% of beauty waste created in this salon. This includes items such as left over color, foils, hair, color tubes and more.
The other thing i pay close attention to is how many disposable items we use. We recently switched our disposable gloves out for reusable. Our Esthi uses washable cotton rounds, and we offer a Retail Recycling program where our clients can bring their shampoo and conditioner bottles back in and fill them for a discount.
Through this process I built a really strong belief in branding and want to encourage everybody to brand their business in whatever direction they feel passionate about. In the meantime if you would like to support our sustainability efforts pleas book your appointments through the salon by visiting our website at pommespa.com.
Hey sweet clients. Here is what has been on my mind lately. Things that have grown up around me and taken over my life. Somehow we accrue things that we want and believe will make us happy. Over time we build a life of things that we thought would fill us up. Thing after thing is cast aside and a new thing is brought in it’s place and somehow the void is not filled. We have also heaved ourselves a hefty portion of work to go along with that emptiness. All those things have to be taken care of, cleaned up and dealt with. I have been on a mission to replace some of the things I think I want with experiences instead. I have the idea that what I will take away from those genuine moments I spend with other people is more personal fulfillment then I could ever find in my things.
Don’t get me wrong. Nice things are nice. I would much rather purchase a quality item that I love and will last than anything else. By all means if you have a physical need fill it… but is it a need? I like to play would I rather. I am looking at a super cute coffee mug and I want it real bad. Would I rather have that mug or use that $15 towards a pedicure that I could go and experience with my BFF or one of my sisters. Would I rather use that money to buy myself a drink at happy hour with my amazing co workers. Would I rather use that extra money towards a relaxing massage or facial. The mug is nice. I have 15 of them at home sure but this one is shaped like a cat. It feels like a must. Well hell eventually you find yourself cleaning a sink full of coffee mugs in the morning before you go to work and wish like hell you had gotten that pedicure instead.
This is just a theory I am testing out at the moment. I would really like you to join the experiment and share your “experiences” (pun feverishly intended) with me. You can reach me via email at email@example.com or by commenting on this post. I can’t wait to hear what you did and your thoughts on if you felt more fulfilled afterwards.
I personally am working on integrating this method in my business by making my hair appointments more of an experience my for my clients. Every color appointment comes with a facial while your color processes. You wont have time to work or check your phone because you will be busy experiencing the appointment from start to finish. I am thinking of gently suggesting that my clients leave their devices in their bags and focus on the experience but I have not gotten there yet. I would love to catch your thoughts on that idea as well though.
Honor is a word widely ignored. I found myself telling my son when he argued that he did not have to agree with me, but he still had to honor me as his parent. I began to reflect on that tidbit and realized that we as a society tend to be lacking in honor.
A lot of us have adopted the idea that to be okay we have to agree implicitly with one another. What if we reverse that thought, and begin to tell ourselves all we have to do is honor ourselves and each other. If we can honor each other through differences then we will be able to reach a new level of conscious being, and open ourselves up to heightened mental state.
Imagine… you honor somebody enough to hear them out without contemplating your own agenda. Bam! You have just opened your mind up to a whole new place. If you aren’t busy forming your rebuttal you might hear what somebody is trying to say. You are flexing your mind. the more you know, hear, see, experience the smarter you are. If you are not constantly searching for a way to make your point or be right then you will remove a tremendous amount of stress in your life. Suddenly it is okay if they have a different perspective, and it’s no longer your job to convince anybody of anything. Secondarily honor goes both ways. You have to honor yourself as well. This may mean that you don’t change your mind about how you feel at all, and that is okay.
So here are several ways to honor yourself and invite a heightened level of self-care into your life.
Listen to yourself. What are you truly saying. Maybe the words coming out of your mouth are yes but realistically you need to say no. Try this… for a week when anybody asks you to do something instead of saying yes or no say ” Let me see if I can. ” Then take your time and get back to the person. Maybe the answer is hell yeah. maybe it’s not right now. Either way you honored yourself enough to take the time you needed to listen to yourself.
Evaluate your desires on a couple of levels. Is it imperative to making you a better you? Will it hurt your family? Can you afford it? If the answer to these questions is an astounding YES, NO, YES. Then what the hell… do it. That is honoring your personal desires which should be as important as the desires of your loved ones.
Take care of yourself. Body, soul and mind. Invest in a beauty budget to keep your body running optimally. Figure out what nourishes your soul. Self help books, yoga or meditation. Workout your brain by reading books or taking time to connect with people who challenge you mentally. If it nourishes your body, soul or mind then it is worth it!
